THE HISTORY

Chronicles of a long distant past.

Please note that this page is under construction. The end of version 7, and the whole of version 8 were difficult times for MI. I haven't had the time to get all of the details of the plotlines from the players. As soon as I do, I'll put it here.

Mercury Isle began as all things do, as something pure. The Islanders boast that the gods made the island specifically to be their playgrounds, but decided to let others inhabit it when they figured out the pleasures of ruling those occupants. It doesn't really matter how it was created, just that it was created, and then it was found.

The stallion who found it was named Celtic Storm. He was a massive specimen of equine nature, the fantastical warbeast of the imagination with a coat of pure black and the breed of Friesian. He named himself King, and was accepted as such by the gods. So began Mercury Isle as it is now known.

In the early days, before the downfall, the population of the island stayed low-to-moderate. Though Celtic would have been happy to govern more equines, newcomers to the kingdom were hard to come by, though what immigrants that did come were loyal and stayed long. Life was fairly peaceful, which (for some reason) kept people away. Unfortunately, the apparent uninhabitation of the island attracted other, unwanted, immigrants. Humans came to the island, lay claim to most of it, and built themselves an amusement park. They paid no heed to the horses' protests and magical threats, they simple captured the spectacular ones and drove the others out. Finally, the only horse left on the island was a stallion named Desperado, former second-in-command to Celtic Storm. Desperado escaped, and the gods rejoiced that finally all of their own were out of harm's way.

The gods resculpted the island and wrought destruction on the humans' work. Those who survived fled and spread the word that the island was cursed, and the place was purified. It remained deserted, though, until one day Desperado decided to return to see how his beloved island fared. He was astonished to find it unmarred and as serene as he remembered it, before the invasion of the humans. With Celtic Storm gone, Desperado re-claimed the island for the horses, and became king of the mortals. Later, a navy-blue unicorn stallion, Dark Magician, would become king of the immortals. The two were friends, and even though the races were seperated, they lived harmoniously. That is, until the arrival of Fiasco. Fiasco was evil, or at least insane and malicious. He drove Desperado and Dark Magician away and became ruler of the kingdom, taking both Desperado's and Dark Magician's mares as his own. With these mares he had five sons. With Black Fire, Desperado's former lead, he sired Drops of Jupiter. With Flower, Dark Magician's former lead, he sired Hybrid Theory. With Serindipity, Dark Magician's love, he sired Futuristic. And with Vagabond, his own love, Fiasco sired Diablerie.
Four years after the birth of the colts, Desperado returned to the island once again. He challenged Fiasco to an epic battle. They fought, and Desperado was victorious. Fiasco died.

But Desperado didn't want to be ruler, and there were five young stallions who had equal right to the throne. Spiritual Fire, son of Black Fire and Desperado, had the most right for the throne of all, but the others wouldn't agree to letting him have it. The island broke up into three races. Hybrid Theory called himself king of the darks, naming Diablerie as his advisor. Drops of Jupiter became king of the mercenaries, the nuetrals of the land, naming Futuristic as his second-in-command. Spiritual Fire became king of the lights, with Desperado at his side as his advisor.

Life went on peacefully for a while, but soon war broke out between the Darks and the Lights. However, a winner was never found in that war, because halfway through it somone returned.

Celtic Storm returned to Mercury Isle, reclaiming the throne. Both the lights and mercenaries were happy to join him, but the darks kept mostly to themselves. Celtic let Hybrid Theory rule them in peace.

Life continued as normal, with only varous interests popping up here and there. Captain Jack Sparrow became the first civilan to kill anyone on the island when he drove Hybrid Hope over a cliff. Dark Magician disappeared abruptly and Zei took over Duelist Kingdom, soon finding love with a friesian stallion named Aladdin. Aladdin soon became King of Games alongside Zei in Duelist Kingdom. Zei then disappeared, and Duelist Kingdom was left empty.

Then the unthinkable happened. History repeated itself in a way no one would have thought possible. Humans returned to the island, setting up a resort on one corner of the island. The humans captured horses and mythicals, and concern about the humans sprang up in the ranks of the horses. Raids were staged on the humans, and horses were stolen from the stables by the wild horses.

Meanwhile, the son of Celtic Storm and Valentino's Echo, Celtic Corsair, had come of age, and he wanted to rule. He was crazy, though, and driven by madness and the voices in his head, he killed a unicorn mare named Remenisce. The gods were furious, for the favored Remenisce. Through her, in her dying breath, the gods made a prophecy that Hybrid Theory would fall and ruin would come upon the island. Everyone hated Corsair for the murder, but no one wanted to believe the prophecy either.

Celtic Storm came upon the scene as Corsair lunged after the King of Games, Aladdin. With a blast of magic (for Storm was a mage) he stopped Corsair cold and flung him back. Celtic Storm shielded the two to avoid hurting the crowd, and the battle began. It was a short battle, Celtic Storm reached into the island node of magic and let it flow freely into Corsair. Because Corsair was not a mage, the incredible inflow of magic killed him. There was nothing left but a pile of ash.

The humans left the island, why they were prompted to do so no one knows, but they chose to leave. It was a relief, and the horses were happy.

Until Celtic Storm was murdered. A stallion named Auschwitz, vaguely known in the ranks of the immortals, killed him in cold blood and took the throne. Auschwitz then decreed that mares would be opressed and bartered like posessions. The stallions that disagreed with him were exiled to what was formerly Duelist Kingdom. Mares who disagreed didn't have a say-so. However, unbeknownst to Auschwitz, a new order began. Evanesco, former queen of the darks, formed an association of mares called The Scythians. They became an underground rebellion, a place for warrior mares to go to actively oppose Auschwitz's reign.

It was not the Scythian mares, however, that became Auschwitz's downfall. It was a work of his own cruel nature that brought his end. There was a mare named Shipwreck who had opposed him, and in punishment he rent her soul in two, letting her keep one half, and eating the other half himself. She was a broken mare after that, unable to live in such a state. But it was she who became the savior of the island. A soul is a thing that is meant to be whole, and because of this the two pieces longed to be back together. When Shipwreck and a few other Scythians climbed the mountain to confront Auschwitz, the pieces of soul were once again in close enough proximity, and the pull of one piece to another was too much for Auschwitz. He imploded under the metaphysical strain and behame only a husk of his former self. Shipwreck got her soul back. Aushwitz drifted away, and no one knows what became of him.

The island had gone through such horror this time that the gods deemed they should interfere. They re-made the island, this time placing a mare of their creation as the leader. They could trust her to do things right. And so, the next era of Mercury Isle began.
